TOLO, NAFPLION
Tolo or sometimes known as Tolon is a seaside resort in the eastern Peloponnese just 10kms away from the first capital of liberated Greece, Nafplion. Villa Amaryllis is idyllically situated in its own gardens just 200m from the beach which is ideal for swimming, sunbathing, water sports and is a great base from which to visit all the wonders of the Peloponnese peninsula.

Nafplion, also known as Nauplie, Nauplio, A'napli and Nafplio is a small, magical, comsopolitan city and, as the first capital of Greece after the country was liberated from Turkish rule, it oozes history and culture and is one of the most popular destinations in Greece for both foreign and Greek tourists.

The graphic, narrow streets with their overhanging balconies, left over from the Venetian rule, historical monuments, museums and architecture, together with the romantic atmosphere are some of the reasons that Nafplion is so popular drawing people back time and time again.

Wander along the harbour, sit and have a drink or a coffee in one of the many cafes along the promenade or in one of the back streets of the old town in one of the many great tavernas where many of the buildings have been preserved to their former traditional splendour. Alternatives to Tolo's sandy beach can be found at Karathona and Arvanitia in Nafplion as well as along the coast at Plaka (Drepano), Vivari, Candia (Kondyli) and Iria.

The museums in Nafplio cover a wide range of subjects: the Archaeological museum, the Folklore museum displaying period dress etc., the Military museum, the worry bead museum which houses worry beads and stone from all over the world and the Ouzo museum which is part of the local ouzo distillery where visitors are able to to attended a guided tour and tasting.

There are three castles in Nafplio, the Bourtzi castle, a small island in the harbour accessible via water taxi, the Palamidi high up on the hill over the town which is accessible via 999 steps (or by car) and the Acronafplia castle. All have their own charm and historical importance.

ARGOLIDA
The county of Argolida is known as the "golden county of Greece" and is home to the world renowned archaeological sites of Mycenae, the Ancient Theatre of Epidavros and the site of Ancient Tiryns, all UNESCO protected areas and all of which are within a half an hours journey from Tolo.

Many other lesser known sites are well worth visiting such as the Argoliko pyramid, supposedly the oldest pyramid in the world, Didyma, around 45 minutes away is a great place to visit, especially for people with interests in geology with its twin chasms in the mountains and underground passages between the two or the old fashioned windmill at Old Epidavros where visitirs can see how flour was milled and bake bread and cookies.

The Argolida is also know for its mild climate attracting year round tourism, and is a huge citrus producer. The aroma of orange blossom hangs in the air in springtime and the fruits decorate the trees during the winter season. Travelling through the Argolida one can see many citrus trees, olives and in many parts artichoke fields.

PELOPONNESE
The Peloponnese is a large peninsula south west of Athens reached by crossing the Corinth Canal. Considered by some an island it is actually part of the mainland and is only separated by the canal itself which is  a major engineering feat that is well worth visiting either to take photos or to take a trip through on the local tourist boats.

The Peloponnese is made up of the prefectures of Argolida, Arcadia, Korinthia, Messinia, Achaia, Lakonia & Elia, each with its own character. The scenery and land changes depending on your location whether coastal or mountainous as the Peloponnese is split down the middle by a high mountain ranges with Mt Parnonas and Taygetos having their own eco-systems full of rare plants and wildlife. Taygetos also offers skiing during the Winter months.

The headquarters of the revolutionaries during the rebellion against the Turkish was in the Peloponnese and there are many monuments attributed to the brave people that fought to free their country. Visit the traditional, graphic villages of Dimitsana, Stemnitsa, Lagadia and Karitaina in Arcadia and see the gunpowder factory, library with wonderful collection of very old, rare books brought from Nafplion by donkey and many other sights.

The rich history and archaeological sites of the Peloponnese are visited all year round by thousands of visitors, all of which are possible from Tolo & Nafplio on a day trip basis. We suggest the following: Ancient Olympia (home of the Olympica Games), Byzantine Mystra, Monemvasia (Greece's equivalent of the Rock of Gibraltar), Sparta, Pylos, Kalavrita (rack & pinion railway and skiing in the winter), Ancient Corinth (Korinthos), Acrocorinth, the Corinth Canal & Ancient Nemea (home to the Nemean Games) as an idea.
